We may not be sure when they will spring up, but fields of snowdrops are a wonderful sight in January to March. It is welcome to see new life after Winter, and these are our favourite places to see snowdrops when exploring on your family holiday in Yorkshire…
Kiplin Hall & Gardens was built for George Calvert founder of Maryland, USA in the 17th century. The walled gardens, scenic walks around the lakes and award-winning tearoom are a lovely way to experience North Yorkshire.
Follow the Snowdrop Trail through the gardens and along the lakeside, or take the guided Snowdrop Stroll usually on a weekend in February, then warm up with coffee and cake in their lovely tea room. Here it is also a wonderful spot for the daffodils in Spring and a lovely family holiday activity all year around.
ExploreThe Goldsborough Hall snowdrops are part of a famous collection, with more than 60 different varieties to be seen. Some of the rare species haven’t even been named yet. The house is 17th century and surrounded by 11 acres of garden, and they have a dedicated Snowdrop Walk and special Snowdrop Days. On these February weekend days, visitors can access more of the grounds of this private former Royal residence.
This lesser-known monastery sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, and the surrounding woodland makes it the ideal snowdrop setting. The priory ruins and formal gardens are managed by English Heritage and the National Trust.
Also fun to see… After starring in a David Attenborough documentary in 2005, the Mount Grace Priory stoats glimpsed in passages under the priory hold the prestigious title of ‘probably the most famous pack of stoats in Britain’.
A fantastic World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey, the snowdrops were first planted over 100 years ago by the Earl de Grey. As you explore the picturesque 12th century abbey ruins and the Studley Royal Water Garden, enjoy the white carpet of snowdrops.
We have spent many a day at Fountains Abbey, and it is one of our favourite family-friendly heritage sites in North Yorkshire. You can walk around the deer park and along the 7 bridges walk for free or pay to go into Fountains Abbey.
If you’re planning lots of fun days out with the family during the summer holidays, we’ve put together a list of top ten things to do in Yorkshire with the kids. And best of all, they’re all free!
The North York Moors is spectacular and home to some of England's most iconic backdrops. A must see in late summer, take advantage of the attractions, stunning coastline, walking, cycling and heritage sites. Also exploring the pub or coffee stops along the way is key while taking in the expansive rolling countryside.
